Well, I tried this and managed to FUBAR my system. It boots straight to a blank desktop, nothing on the taskbar/tooltray will work (including the shutdown button). The only way i can do anything with the system right now is to hit Ctrl-Alt-T and type firefox, because i don't know the application names of the other programs on this system. I tried to remove the Kicker and KSMserver but that apparently is not a road you can back down.

I can hit Ctrl Alt Delete and ICEwm will let me restart ICEwm but not shutdown or restart.

Does anyone have any advice here???

First off you can always restore to the original factory setting as long as you have the Xandros disk that came with you EEE, I have restored mine many times. Now to answer the rest of your questions. Yes you can put xp on the primary SSD and it will work fine, you will need to use a different install for linux than your Xandros disk to get it on the second SDD. I recoomend that you try Ubuntu with the array kernal check out my other blog posts.

Thanks for the info. Very interesting. I've just received my eee pc 1000 (SSD Xandros version). I'm excited about trying Linux for the first time, but unfortunately I'm completely clueless, so I need to dual boot with Windows XP. However, realistically I'd be happy to have windows on the faster primary drive, and a Linux version anywhere that works. Would it be sensible to do a clean install of Windows from a CD (which would presumably put it on the fast SSD), followed by a Linux install after that? I suspect I would need to use something other than the eeepc recovery disk because of the sda1 issue. I'd be happy to try Ubuntu eee or something similar.

You're guide is excellent, but still a little complicated for me. Would it be easier to install windows and then install Ubuntu somewhere else?

My second question is, perhaps, more important. If it goes wrong, or I don't like it, can I revert back to the exact factory Xandros installation with the rescue disk? Is this dependant on whatever partitioning or formatting I've done earlier?

Many thanks for answers before I take the plunge.

Thank you for your time and support to others. I was tryong to get the full desktop. When I got to the point of getting the kicker instead I got the pidgin.... so I get some error when applying the rest of proposed configuration... and eventhoug I get the full desktop icon I does not work. Please advice.
Thank you.

This worked for me although I installed “advanced-desktop-eeepc” instead of kicker and ksm server, I'm using a eee pc 1000H.

I wrote about it here:

I also buy books that are mostly nonfiction. I have not had the privilege of finding used books in a Hastings but I will certainly be a more frequent visitor when I do.

Last night I installed a software update that had automatically downloaded from ASUS. Now when I boot into full desktop mode the login screen no longer appears even though I do NOT have the autologin set. Easy mode still asks me for my password but the full desktop mode doesn't. Also the logout feature in full desktop mode now seems to do a restart instead (and doesn't ask for a password). Anyyone else seen this ? can I uninstall the update to see if that fixes the problem ?
