Eee PC 1000 Advanced Full Desktop Mode

July 25th, 2008 by troycoon

My new Eee 1000 is here and it is sweet. The larger screen and keyboard are just what I needed, not to mention the 40gb SSD. So now that I have it Hmmm….. what to do? Eee Ubuntu does not have a compatible version yet but I want a full desktop. It seems that the 901s and the 1000 don’t have that as an option in the repositories, well I know that the two packages that were need to get full desktop on the 701 were ksmserver and kicker, so why not try them. so here are the steps I took to get it working, and it seems to be working fine. Disclaimer, try these are your own risk. I assume that these steps will work with the 901s also, but Michael is not interested in trying it on his.

How to set up Advanced Desktop or Full Desktop on an Eee PC 1000

  1. Press Ctrl & Alt and T at the same time to get to the terminal.
  2. Type sudo synaptic
  3. Click settings and then repositories
  4. Click add in the bottom left corner
  5. Put http://download.tuxfamily.org/eeepcrepos/ in the URl:
  6. Put p701 in the distribution
  7. Put main etch in the sections
  8. You have just added the 701 repositories
  9. Now close the repository window and click reload in synaptic
  10. Next search for ksmserver and then kicker right click on each one and mark install
  11. Click apply at the top of the page and wait for synaptic to finish
  12. Close synaptic and the terminal window
  13. You should now have a full desktop option in you shutdown options.

I hope that you will find this useful, I will keep you up to date when we get eee-Ubuntu running on the 901 and the 1000

I followed your instructions and got to the advanced desktop no problem. Thanks. I really hate to do this, but I have a follow up question. Staroffice isn’t working for me using the advanced desktop. It works fine in the easy mode but crashes every time I start it up in advanced. Have you had this problem? Any idea how to fix it?

  2. I had not tried star office in full desktop mode, but mine is broke also. It seems that the ksmserver and kicker packages that are in the repository I gave you are modified for the EEE pc. I looked to see if there were any more recent versions and was not able to find any. I also tried to install open office from the 701 repository and that didn’t work. The only thing that I can tell you is that you might try to compile openoffice from source. I’m not going to spend to much time trying to get star office to work since I will probably be going to Ubuntu within the week, if Michael figures it all out that soon anyway. If anyone has a solution for paul please post it.

I tried this but got an error message. It couldn’t find/load the p701 repository for some reason.

  4. The repository may be down, or you may try it again. I’m not sure why you would run into problems.

    Thanks

OOPs, it was a typo, I tried again and it worked. Gotta get used
to this smaller keyboard. Is there a way to default to full desktop
    mode on power-up ?

    Thanks.

booting into full desktop is easy! when in easy mode, go to settings tab, then personalization, then choose boot into full.

  7. Cheers , I just read your blog post about desktop pc it seems a very good recopilation from internet articles as wikipedia as other related desktop pc books. Congrats on your blog, I dugged and stumble today Monday due to the great post about desktop pc . Cheers Andy Colleman.

I also report that after a failure due to the repository being temporarily unavailable, this procedure worked fine.
The fact that Star office crashes on startup is bad, since I use my eeepc for presentations. I have seen some threads proposing a fix although that didn’t work for me…

Last night I installed a software update that had automatically downloaded from ASUS. Now when I boot into full desktop mode the login screen no longer appears even though I do NOT have the autologin set. Easy mode still asks me for my password but the full desktop mode doesn’t. Also the logout feature in full desktop mode now seems to do a restart instead (and doesn’t ask for a password). Anyyone else seen this ? can I uninstall the update to see if that fixes the problem ?

  10. This worked for me although I installed “advanced-desktop-eeepc” instead of kicker and ksm server, I’m using a eee pc 1000H.

    I wrote about it here:

Thank you for your time and support to others. I was tryong to get the full desktop. When I got to the point of getting the kicker instead I got the pidgin…. so I get some error when applying the rest of proposed configuration… and eventhoug I get the full desktop icon I does not work. Please advice.
    Thank you.

Well, I tried this and managed to FUBAR my system. It boots straight to a blank desktop, nothing on the taskbar/tooltray will work (including the shutdown button). The only way i can do anything with the system right now is to hit Ctrl-Alt-T and type firefox, because i don’t know the application names of the other programs on this system. I tried to remove the Kicker and KSMserver but that apparently is not a road you can back down.

I can hit Ctrl Alt Delete and ICEwm will let me restart ICEwm but not shutdown or restart.

Does anyone have any advice here???
